Unions Behind Wisconsin Judge's Temporary Restraining Order

Authorities are crying foul after it was learned that the judge who issued a temporary restraining order preventing the implementation of Wisconsin's new law governing public-sector unions is the mother of a union activist.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Judge Maryann Sumi issued a temporary restraining order last friday on the law that would prevent unions from collecting dues from Wisconsin public employees. However, it has since been learned that Ms. Sumi has a clear conflict of interest in that she is the mother of Jacob Sinderband, a political operative who also happens to be a former lead field manager with the AFL-CIO and data manager for the SEIU State Council. Both unions have members who are public sector workers in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin's Gov. Scott Walker ignited a firestorm when he attempted to reign in the kind of lucrative union contracts for public sector employees that are currently bankrupting many states across the U.S. Unions responded by staging mass demonstrations for weeks. Democratic lawmakers, who are aligned with the unions but in the minority in the State House, left the state for three weeks to avoid a vote on the governor's proposal.
Republican lawmakers resorted to rules that allow a vote without all members present to pass restrictions on non-budge related items, such as restrictions on collective bargaining rights.
As a result, the Dane County district attorney filed a lawsuit challenging the vote which resulted in Judge Sumi issuing a temporary restraining order to prevent the law from taking effect until she reviews the case.
"This is a problem," says Andrew Breitbart's Big Government website. "Judge Maryann Sumi should have recused herself entirely from the Wisconsin battle due to her inability to be neutral in this case."
Calls for her removal from the case are now being made. According to MediaTrackers, Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen asked the appellate court to set aside the temporary restraining order because the Legislature's rules trump any requirements pertaining to the way the vote was handled and it is believed that Judge Sumi's conflict of interest will also be raised at this time.
