The third eye is more myth than fact, although many cultures and religions sincerely believe it exists and that it plays an important role in our spiritual lives. Regardless of whether it’s real or not, Christians should not attempt to “open” the third eye because it can be a gateway to the occult.

In the Hindu tradition, the third eye, which some compare to a “sixth sense,” is believed to be associated with the chakras, which are alleged wheel-like energy centers that are distributed throughout the body. These energy centers are conduits for a universal life force known by various names such as chi, qi, prana, vital force, etc. The third eye is believed to be associated with the sixth chakra in the body, known as the Ajna (“brow”) chakra which is allegedly located in the center of the head, parallel to the middle of the eyebrows. The tilaka (red mark) that Hindus place between their eyebrows is representative of the third eye.

The belief is that the opening of this third eye chakra can enhance concentration, imagination, intuition, spiritual perception and create a “universal connection”; it also serves as a gateway to realms of higher consciousness and spiritual abilities such as clairvoyance, visions, precognition, even out-of-body experiences.

Many believe the third eye is linked to the pineal gland, a pea-sized gland shaped like a pine cone that is located near the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.

“It’s a revered tool of seers and mystics and is considered to be the organ of supreme universal connection,” said author Candice Covington to Healthline. “Developing the third eye is the doorway to all things psychic. The illusion of separation between self and spirit dissolves when the third eye connection is cultivated.”

Covington, who authored Essential Oils in Spiritual Practice: Working with the Chakras, Divine Archetypes refers to the pineal gland as the “biological relative of the energetic third eye chakra.”

The pineal gland, which produces melatonin, the hormone that affects circadian rhythms and reproductive hormones, is linked to a chemical known as DMT (N-dimethyltriptamine) which is sometimes called the “spirit molecule” or “seat of the soul” because of its supposed relationship to consciousness.

However, there has never been any scientifically proven link between the pineal gland and spiritual experience of any kind.

Some believe that certain exercises can assist in opening the third eye, such as focusing on the spot between the eyebrows and imagining an indigo blue ball of light in front of you.

As this website instructs: “Take a deep breath and hold it. Then gently bite your tongue with your front teeth. During the entire exhale, make a THOHH… (Thooowww) sound. Once you find the right pitch, you’ll feel your third eye tremble. Repeat this six times in a row.”

Signs that a third eye is opening include vivid dreams that are easier to remember, déjà vu experiences, sensations of peace and the ability to feel and see “other beings.” It supposedly enhances meditation, makes you feel other people’s emotions, and see auras. Although many religions and cultures believe in its existence, there really is no concrete evidence that this third eye – or the energy associated with it – is real.

Because belief in a third eye is associated with pantheistic worldviews as well as seeing and communicating with unknown spiritual entities and divination, Christians should not engage in any exercises designed to open this portal.

Even though the evil eye isn’t real, calling upon spiritual entities that are not sourced in God can pose significant risks to one’s spiritual, physical, and mental health.
