Norway’s Princess Martha Louise has announced that she will no longer officially represent the royal house due to her intentions to marry Durek Verrett, the American “Shaman to the Stars.”

According to Fox News, the princess who is the 51-year-old daughter of Norway’s King Harald and fourth in line to the throne, became engaged to Verrett in June, a move seen as very unpopular in the country.

Verrett, a spiritual guru who caters to the stars in Hollywood, calls himself a “sixth generation shaman and visionary of the ‘Now Age’ with a strong focus on the evolution of humanity.” He authored the book Spirit Hacking in which he claims cancer is a choice. On his website, he lists his credientials as extensive study of “all the world philosophies, religions, spiritual teachings, and theories.”

As The New York Times explains, Verrett, whose father was a shaman and his mother a psychic medium, employs what he refers to as “spirit shamanism.” In this practice, the shaman receives “messages from spirits while working through the frequencies, energy, even the “colors” supposedly emanated by a person’s body, with the goal of alleviating negativity or pain.”

Some of his more famous clients include actress and New Age enthusiast Gwyneth Paltrow, and actress Nina Dobrev.

The Princess is no stranger to New Age ideas. She has written books in which she claimed to have contact with angels and lost her honorific title of “Her Royal Highness” in 2002 when she went to work as a clairvoyant.

Norwegians are not in favor of the union. A recent poll found that 17 percent of the population now has a lower opinion of the generally popular royal family because of the Princess’ plans to marry Verrett and move to Los Angeles with her three daughters from her first marriage to author Ari Behn. Behn, who accused Kevin Spacey of groping him, committed suicide on Christmas day in 2019.

"I have decided that at the present time I will no longer carry out official duties for the royal household," the Princess said in a statement issued in conjunction with her parents. This step was taken in order to “create peace around the royal household,” she said.

At a press conference, King Harald confirmed that the Princess would retain her title but no longer represent the royal family.

"I am sorry that the princess will no longer represent the royal house," the King said, adding that "we agree to disagree."

His wife, Queen Sonja, explained: "We have looked at this process from all sides…This has been a unanimous decision."

The couple also agreed to "clarify the distinction between their own activities and the royal household" and not to refer to other royals in social media or in their commercial activities. They also confirmed that Verrett would not receive a title when he and the Princess marry.

The couple, who have been together since 2019, plan to attend family and traditional royal events.
