An online campaign from One Million Moms is calling upon parents to forgo the film, Dear Santa - a movie that was outright banned in the Philippines – and to withdraw their support for streaming giant, Paramount+ until they stop airing Satanic-themed content.
Dear Santa, a movie starring Jack Black premiers today on the Paramount+ streaming platform. The premise of the story is a young boy named Liam who misspells Santa’s name on his “Dear Santa” letter and addresses it to Satan instead. The letter flies off to hell where Satan gets hold of it and considers himself to have been summoned by the boy.
When he appears to Liam, he announces, "You lucked out big time because I'm way better than Santa," according to the trailer. He gives Liam three wishes, then adds: "By the way, after you make your wishes, I'm taking your soul."
Satan proceeds to thrill Liam with manifestations of all the magical things he can do, including helping the boy win at the casino and then meet his favorite singer, Post Malone, at a concert.
In the end, Liam wants Satan to help him do something kind, which frustrates Satan. “I've tried everything. That kid's incorruptible."
Although the end gives a hint of redemption, the whole theme of the movie is about how fun and powerful and magical Satan is compared to Santa Claus.
The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) of the Philippines banned the movie outright, citing the film’s portrayal of Satan in a positive light “as an attack on fundamental beliefs of the Catholic and Christians faiths.”
Giving the film an X rating, which means it cannot be screened publicly, Board chairperson Lala Sotto-Antonio explained that “While we are fully supportive of our movie and television industry, the MTRCB is mandated by PD 1986 to uphold and promote respect for Filipino cultural values.”
One Million Moms is calling upon parents to sign a pledge stating that they will not watch his movie or support Paramount+ unless they avoid airing satanic themed programming.
