Yes! The following description of a black mass is excerpted from my book, The Learn to Discern Compendium: Is It Christian or New Age, and describes in detail what this ritual is and why it is such a grievous offense against Our Lord.
The black mass is considered to be the principal rite of every satanic group. The rite is usually officiated by a celebrant, a deacon and a subdeacon. The instruments used include candles, an inverted pentacle, a chalice full of wine or liquor, a bell, a sword, an aspergillum (used to sprinkle water) and an inverted crucifix. An authentically consecrated Host is also used. The altar is a nude woman and all participants wear black clothes with a hood.
“The rite follows more or less that of the Catholic Mass with the prayers recited in Latin, English and French. Instead of the name of God the name of Satan is invoked, together with the names of various demons, the Our Father is pronounced in the contrary or negative sense (our father who art in hell), invectives are hurled against Jesus Christ and the Host is profaned in various ways (utilizing it in sexual practices, trampling it repeatedly with hate),” writes Father Gabriele Amorth.
Practitioners of Satanism normally construct an altar for this purpose. Special clothing must be worn such as black robes or other dark attire which symbolizes the power of darkness. Black and white candles are used, but no more than one white candle can be lit during a ritual. The black candle represents the light and wisdom of Satan and the white candle represents the followers of Christ and is used for their destruction.
The chalice or cup is another item needed and all types are acceptable except gold, because gold represents Heaven. Anything can be drunk from the cup as long as it intensifies one’s feelings, such as alcohol or other drugs. The last item on the list is a sword or knife, which symbolizes force.
Attendance at a Black Mass, either as a willing participant or out of curiosity, poses extreme spiritual dangers due to the direct invocation of demonic entities involved in this ritual. Even the places where these Masses are held need to be exorcised afterward because the demons summoned have been given the authority to be there and won’t leave until this authority is withdrawn.
This is why, after a black mass was conducted in a heavy metal bar in Ottawa, Canada in 2019, Archbishop Terrence Prendergast explained that these rituals “have the potential of opening a spiritual doorway into the evil realm — giving demonic spirits permission, in other words — to infest our city with negative and evil energies.”
This is so true that, after a black mass held in Oklahoma City in 2014, Archbishop Paul S. Coakley performed prayers of exorcism to rid the building of evil spirits that may have lingered after the ritual.
Even though a person might choose to attend a black mass out of curiosity, this doesn’t protect them from grave harm.
“You cannot attend such an event—even if one does so merely out of curiosity, and not with any firm desire to worship Satan—without being adversely affected,” said an exorcist to Aleteia just prior to the Oklahoma event. Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said, “The mere fact that this black mass in Oklahoma City will be public lends it a certain legitimacy, and I suspect that some people will go simply to be entertained. What they may not realize immediately is that simply by going, they will open themselves to the power of the demonic.”
Besides convincing people that he doesn’t exist, Satan’s next best trick is to convince them that he’s the hottest new trend in entertainment and those who don’t play along are dumb Muggles deserving of mockery and marginalization. Don’t be fooled! As I reveal in my book, once one becomes involved in Satanism, it is particularly difficult to get out, not only because most groups threaten members with death but because of the catastrophic harm done to the soul. A variety of afflictions manifest in people who worship Satan from depression and suicidal tendencies to outright possession.
When it comes to Satan, you’re much better off a Muggle than a lost soul!
