New Evidence of Weaponization of Law Against Catholics

As if the 2023 memo declaring Traditional Mass Catholics as domestic terrorists was not bad enough, recently uncovered evidence reveals federal prosecutors in the Biden administration who were unfairly targeting pro-life supporters and nuns “who still wear the habit.”

In an explosive new report by The Daily Wire, the Senate Judiciary Committee released text messages between two federal prosecutors employed by President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice who were discussing their desire to prosecute nuns during investigations of the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The communications, which were obtained by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), reveal federal prosecutors Joseph Cooney and Molly Gaston texting one another in February 2021 after finding photos of religious sisters in a New York Times photo of the January 6 “Stop the Steal” rally. In the image, the sisters were wearing traditional habits and had large Trump scarves around their necks.

“I would like to take a special assignment of finding and prosecuting them,” Gaston wrote to Cooney.

“I’m with you,” responded Cooney. “Although I’d like to prosecute any nun who still wears the head habit.”

To which Gaston replied, “Hahaha.”

The nuns in the photograph were later found to be associated with a convent that is not in communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

Cooney and Gaston were also caught sharing disparaging texts about Catholics who were upset about President Biden continuing to receive Communion at Holy Trinity in Georgetown in spite of his pro-abortion policies. Other text messages found the two ridiculing those who were upset about the COVID-19 restrictions on Catholic masses.

Although both Cooney and Gaston were fired from the Justice Department when President Donald Trump took office, Cooney did not miss an opportunity to disparage a recent report issued by the Department of Justice on the weaponization of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act. This report found that the Biden administration used the Act to prosecute and imprison pro-life protestors while downplaying, or outright ignoring, attacks on pregnancy resource centers and houses of worship. It also found that “the Biden DOJ was in constant contact with pro-abortion groups to track the travel plans of Christian pro-life activists who had not been charged with any crimes.”

Cooney responded to these shocking revelations by saying he is proud of his team’s work on these cases.

“The Trump DOJ’s report on the FACE Act is false,” Cooney said in a post on social media. “I am proud of my team’s work prosecuting people who conspired to barricade a reproductive health clinic, shoved staff, and forced a woman seeking treatment to climb through a reception window. That’s not First Amendment activity — that’s a crime.”

Cooney, is now running as a Democrat for a congressional seat in Virginia’s 7th congressional district, which is part of the Diocese of Arlington that serves over 430,000 Catholics in Northern Virginia.

This latest evidence of anti-Christian bias from the Biden-era Justice Department is just another example in an ever-lengthening list of similar attacks on people of faith, including the leaked January 2023 internal FBI memorandum that labeled Traditionalist Catholics as “Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists.”

Senator Grassley, chair of the Judiciary Committee, expressed his outrage over the Justice Department’s weaponization of the law. “Freedom of religion is a cherished First Amendment right enshrined in our Constitution by the Founding Fathers,” he said in a statement to EWTN News. “I was appalled, but sadly not surprised, to discover evidence of Biden DOJ prosecutors threatening to use the power of the federal justice system to target people of faith. Time and again, my oversight has shown the Biden Justice Department, including these prosecutors who went on to advance Jack Smith’s Arctic Frost investigation, showed total disdain for equal justice.”
