Justice Scalia Encourages Young Catholics to Remain Faithful

Justice Antonin Scalia addressed a standing-room-only crowd of more than 500 Catholic youth in Denver last weekend to encourage them not to yield to criticism of their faith.

LifeSiteNews.com is reporting that Scalia, 75,  spoke at the Living the Catholic Faith Conference, an event that drew more than 3,000 young people to the mile-high city last weekend.

He encouraged the crowd to look beyond those who scorn them for their belief in the transcendent, in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, their recitation of the Rosary, for kneeling in front of the Blessed Sacrament or remaining faithful to the pope.

Christianity is worth the scorn, he said.

Have “the courage to have your wisdom regarded as stupidity,” Justice Scalia said. “The wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight.”

He went on to say that the pundits and media couldn't believe in a miracle if it was performed right under their noses.

"My point is not that reason and intellect need to be laid aside. A faith without a rational basis should be laid aside as false. ... What is irrational is to reject a priori the possibility of miracles in general and the resurrection of Jesus Christ in particular."

Justice Scalia has never been one to ignore the persecution of Christians in modern times. As long ago as 1996, the longest serving member of the high court spoke at the Mississippi College School of Law, a Southern Baptist institution, and said the modern world is unfriendly to "traditional" Christians and regards them as "simple-minded." The "worldly wise," he added, "just will not have anything to do with miracles."

He went on, "We are fools for Christ's sake" and "we must pray for the courage to endure the scorn of the sophisticated world."
