The U.S. Bishops have signaled that if abortion funding is satisfactorily removed from health care reform, they will back Democratic leadership in support of passing the bill, even if that means using the controversial reconciliation process to do so.

U.S. Bishops announced yesterday that they will support an amendment to the Senate health care bill that will prohibit federal funding for abortions. Their support was expressed in a letter to every member of the U.S. Senate who are expected to vote on the measure today.

While U.S. Bishops meeting in Baltimore were concentrating their efforts on how to oppose the anticipated pro-abortion policies of an Obama administration, two Catholic Democrats published an editorial in a Baltimore paper calling on the bishops to focus on issues other than abortion.

“Yahweh, I know you are near . . .” is the opening verse in one of America’s most popular hymns, but the Vatican has directed that when referring to God in liturgical texts or hymns, the name Yahweh should not be used out of respect for Catholic tradition as well as Jewish sensitivities about pronouncing the name of God.
