What Are Your Children Watching?

By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Writer The Parents Television Council (PTC) has released a report rating the suitability of the 20 most popular prime time broadcast shows among children ages 2-17. The ratings are based on an objective analysis of the frequency and explicitness of foul language, sexual content, and violence present in each series. Also taken into consideration is the time slot, target audience, theme and plotline of each program rated. “Not  all children ages 2-17 watch age-appropriate programs, according to Nielsen Media Research,” says the PTC in a press release. “Television shows that might sound innocent enough, such as Family Guy or American Dad, push the limits of decency with sexual innuendo and adult themes. On the other hand, children also flock to TV shows with positive values, like Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and American Idol.” Each series was rated as suitable, questionably suitable, or unsuitable for young audiences, and then ranked from best to worst. The most suitable programs include Extreme Makeover, Home Edition, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, Don’t Forget the Lyrics, Deal or No Deal,  NBC Sunday Night Football, and  American Idol. Shows falling into the questionable category include Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, America's Got Talent, Amazing Race,  Survivor, King of the Hill,  The Simpsons, and American Gladiator. Unsuitable programs are Hell's Kitchen, House, Heroes, Moment of Truth, American Dad and Family Guy.
