Media Watchdog Lists Best/Worst TV Shows for Children

By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Writer The Parents Television Council (PTC) analyzed the twenty most popular prime time broadcast shows among children ages two to17, ranking the programs according to their suitability for young viewers.   Their report found that television shows with innocent sounding titles such as Family Guy and American Dad  actually push the limits of decency with sexual innuendo and adult themes. On the other hand, children flock to shows with positive values such as Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and American Idol. “PTC ratings are based on an objective quantitative and qualitative analysis of the frequency and explicitness of foul language, sexual content, and violence present in each series,” the Council said in a press release. “The PTC also takes into consideration time slot, target audience, themes and plotlines of each program it rates.” Each series was then rated as suitable, questionably suitable, or unsuitable for young audiences, and then ranked from best to worst. Most Suitable (listed best to worst): Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,  Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? Don’t Forget the Lyrics . Deal or No Deal,  NBC Sunday Night Football,  American Idol Questionable (listed best to worst): Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, America’s Got Talent, Amazing Race, Survivor, King of the Hill, The Simpsons, American Gladiator. Not Suitable: Hell's Kitchen, House, Heroes, Moment of Truth, American Dad, Family Guy To view the full report, go to http://www.parentstv.org/PTC/publications/reports/top10bestandworst/2008/main.asp © All Rights Reserved, Living His Life Abundantly®/Women of Grace®  http://www.womenofgrace.com
