If you have been praying with us you understand that we have been enlisted as soldiers in God's kingdom, by virtue of our baptism and confirmation. Every moment of our lives on earth is a battle, a spiritual battle, and our enemy the Devil never rests. He is constantly prowling around seeking souls to devour.
I don't know about you, but these truths are more palpable today than ever before. With all that is happening corporately and individually in our nation and within our Church, it would be easy to give in to discouragement, fear, doubt and even hopelessness.
St. Thérèse teaches us in the quote above, when our enemy provokes us to combat, we behave like soldiers. How does a soldier behave? What are their disciplines?
Soldiers in the United States Army are encouraged to adopt the virtues of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. These are excellent virtues and certainly worthy of modeling.
But soldiers in the army of Our Lord and His Mother have an even higher calling. We are given the supernatural strength of the Holy Spirit to "spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross." CCC 1303
Through the centuries of the Church we have been given the examples of the saints, especially the martyrs, who have been willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to spread and defend the faith.
Let us prayerfully consider how the Lord may be leading us in our call and duty as Christian soldiers in the Church Militant today. And through His grace, let us never be afraid of the battle or ashamed of the Cross.
