A 31 year-old Irish woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl earlier this year after miscarrying the baby's twin and being given an abortion drug to insure against infection.
The UK Mirror is reporting on the incredible story of Michelle Hui of County Kildare, Ireland, who was devastated when she miscarried what she thought was her third child last year. Only six weeks along in her pregnancy, she was on her way to work when the miscarriage occurred. Two different doctors at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin cared for her and carried out five scans before determining that she had indeed lost her baby.
As a precaution, she was given the abortion pill, mifepristone, to insure that no fetal matter remained in her uterus that could cause infection. She was then told to take a pregnancy test to determine whether any harmful clots still remained from the miscarriage.
The test came back positive and she found herself back in the hospital preparing for a routine surgical procedure that would have removed the contents of her uterus.
It was at this point that doctors detected a heart beat on a scan.
“The doctor went out and came back in with a more senior doctor and he did the scan again and he said, ‘you are not going to believe it, we’ve got a heartbeat’. It was the best feeling ever," Michelle said.
Doctors determined that the twin of the baby whose life had been lost to miscarriage had managed to survive not just the miscarriage but a dose of a powerful abortion-causing drug.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said Michelle. “Neither could the doctors. But as happy as I was, I was angry they had missed her on the scans. They said that with all the blood and clots it must have created shadows so they couldn’t see her. They said I was blessed."
So blessed, in fact, that she's been written about in medical journals with one of her doctors admitting that in his 25 years of practicing medicine, he has never come across - or even heard of - a similar case.
The best news of all is that Megan Hui was born on February 25 at a healthy weight of just under six pounds. She will now join the Hui's other two children, Mya, four, and Noah two.
Michelle and her husband Ross could not be more proud.
“She’s our little miracle,” added Michelle. “We were always a strong family, but it has just made us stronger. I wouldn’t have been able to get through it all if it had not been for my husband and my two children.
“It was an incredibly difficult time, but now we have a precious and healthy little girl.”
