Justice! Man Gets Six Years for Killing Unborn Child

iStock_000016429081_SmallA Norwegian man who tricked his girlfriend into drinking a smoothie laced with abortion pills has been sentenced to six years in jail and fined $28,000.

The Daily Mail is reporting on the 26 year-old unidentified man who tried twice to kill his unborn child after his former girlfriend decided not to get an abortion.

He claims the woman, with whom he already has a child, became pregnant after a one-night-stand at a friend’s party. When she refused to abort, he took the matter into his own hands and purchased pills online that were supposed to induce a miscarriage. He then tricked her into taking the pills by claiming they were painkillers.

When they went for their first scan of the child and were told that it was healthy and developing normally, he admitted to the court that he was "devastated".

Once again, he went online and read about how babies who survived the pills meant to destroy them were often born with birth defects.

He told the court: “After the first attempt didn't work, I thought that if it was my fault that the child was born with major malformations, I would not be able to live with that. So I decided to try again.”

This time, he bought more pills and mixed them in a smoothie which his unsuspecting girlfriend drank. She began having cramps almost immediately and miscarried shortly thereafter.

It was not until she went to a doctor to determine the cause of the miscarriage that she learned what had been done to her and proceeded to press charges.

Her former boyfriend's lawyer begged for leniency, citing the man’s remorse for what he had done, but the court was unmoved.

Instead, the judge sided with state prosecutor Kaja Strandford who told the Adresseavisen newspaper that she was seeking the maximum sentence of seven years.

“He imported these substances. All of it was precisely and cynically planned,” she said.

The court handed down a sentence of six years and a fine of close to $30,000 US dollars.

Justice was served in this case. Although it’s laudable that the man is at least feeling remorse for the selfishness that drove him to this murderous deed, that remorse does not offset the damage done to his girlfriend, who will be forever denied the joy of raising this child. Nor does it atone for the loss sustained by the most innocent victim of all in this case - the child who was robbed of the most fundamental human right of all - the right to life.
