An altar containing articles used in occult ceremonies has been uncovered in the backyard of Jared Loughner, the man accused of shooting 19 people, six of whom died, at a congresswoman's public event in Tucson on Saturday.
The New York Daily News is reporting that investigators found a shrine hidden in a camouflage tent behind Loughner's Tucson home. The altar contained a skull sitting on a pot filled with shriveled oranges. A row of ceremonial candles and a bag of potting soil lay nearby. Experts said all the items are elements typically featured in occult ceremonies.
Loughner's background check has revealed disturbing evidence of a young man who was obsessed with mind control and what he termed "conscience dreaming." Also known as lucid dreaming, this is a state in which a person is awake and aware that they are dreaming. New Agers like to induce the state for inspiration and guidance from outside forces, to meet with deceased loved ones, or to experience out-of-body travel.
In Loughner's case, he seems to be referring to the use of conscious dreaming as a mind-control technique that many anti-government groups believe is used to control the masses.
While investigators have focused on Loughner's on-line anti-government rants as a possible motive for the Saturday's shooting, the discovery of the shrine suggests other more sinister motives could be at play.
