LifeNews.com is reporting that Alvin Jones III, the toddler son of Tanya Reaves who died on July 20, 2012 after receiving a second trimester abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Chicago will receive $2 million beginning on his 18th birthday as settlement in the case involving his mother's death.
Reaves' case gained national attention when it was discovered that she had died of complications from a botched abortion performed by Carolyn Hoke at a Planned Parenthood facility located on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Reaves underwent the procedure at 11:00 a.m. and began to bleed heavily afterward. It was five hours before Planned Parenthood called for an ambulance which transported the dying woman to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The clinic offered no help to the hospital trauma team who eventually discovered the source of her bleeding, which was an incomplete abortion and a 3/16 inch uterine perforation and possible severing of her left uterine artery. The hospital attempted to save her life by giving her an emergency hysterectomy but it was too late. She succumbed to injuries that might have been survivable had she received proper emergency care in a timely manner.
Walter Hoye, a black pro-life leader who has closely followed the case, told LifeNews that while he's glad that the settlement acknowledgement Planned Parenthood’s role in the event, he's disappointed that the clinic will not be held accountable any further for the appalling lack of concern they showed for Tanya on that fateful day.
“In my opinion, Planned Parenthood is guilty of criminal negligence, depraved indifference, and gross medical incompetence,” Hoye said. “Now that the case is settled, we will never know how a jury would have reacted.”
Many serious questions about the behavior of clinic activity that day will now remain unanswered.
“Why didn’t Planned Parenthood call 911 immediately once Tonya Reaves started experiencing complications following her abortion?” asked John Jansen of the Pro-Life Action League.
“Did Planned Parenthood call a private ambulance company instead of calling 911? If so, why? It was a Chicago Fire Department ambulance that ultimately transported Tonya Reaves to Northwestern Memorial Hospital — five and a half hours after her abortion. If Planned Parenthood didn’t call 911, who notified the Fire Department and told them to send an ambulance?” Jansen asked. “Does Planned Parenthood’s Loop Health Center have a medical emergency policy? If so, was it followed in the case of Tonya Reaves?”
Most abortion facilities in the state of Illinois are subject to inspections by the Department of Public Health, Jansen explained, but due to a loophole in the state’s complicated abortion facility regulatory scheme, all Planned Parenthood abortion clinics in Illinois are unlicensed and not subject to state inspection.
“As a result," he said, "there is a lot we don’t know about Illinois’ Planned Parenthood facilities.”
