is reporting that the president made the remarks while speaking to a room full of donors holding tickets that started at $500. He had just concluded another roundtable with 25 donors contributing $30,000 per head which was closed to the press.
After criticizing his opponent, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for wanting to stop federal subsidies to Planned Parenthood, he told the group: “Mr. Romney wants to get rid of funding for Planned Parenthood. I think that is a bad idea,” Obama said. “I’ve got two daughters. I want them to control their own health care choices. We’re not going backwards, we’re going forwards.”
According to CNS, in fiscal year 2010, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) received $487.4 million from federal and state governments, which makes up about one-third of the organization's $1 billion in annual assets. According to its fact sheet, Planned Parenthood performed 329,445 abortions in 2010.
Planned Parenthood is currently being investigated by the U.S. House and has been ordered to produce internal audits from 1998 to 2010 showing how much federal money they received and how it was spent. The nation's largest abortion provider has been besieged with investigations, lawsuits and criminal charges in the past few years for everything ranging from aiding and abetting child traffickers to improper billing of Medicaid.
