2016 Documentary A Box Office Success

Even before its major rollout this weekend, the new documentary film, 2016: Obama's America, is considered to be a box office success, ranking as the third most popular film behind The Dark Knight and Total Recall last weekend in New York City's Union Square.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film, which is based on the book by Dinesh D'Souza entitled The Roots of Obama's Rage, and produced by Academy Award winning producer Gerald R. Mullen (Schindler's List, Jurassic Park), grossed $1.2 million last weekend even though it was showing on less than 200 screens nationwide. This catapults the film into the second highest per-screen-average film among major releases last weekend.

In the film, D'Souza travels across four continents to "find answers to Obama's past and reveal where America will be in 2016" if he wins re-election. What he discovers is not favorable for either Obama or America, which is why movie buffs are so surprised that the film is doing so well in heavily pro-Obama cities such as New York City. In fact, one film executive joked that people must have thought it was a pro-Obama documentary.

However, the film's success is only expected to grow from here as it continues its rollout this weekend into 1.075 theaters nationwide.

"I think the reason why the film is doing so well is threefold --- we've expanded into good markets, we've been advertising nationally for two weeks on talk radio and television news channels including Fox News Channel, A&E, the History Channel and MSNBC," said 2016 co-director John Sullivan to the Reporter.
