Fox News is reporting that a jury decided Kermit Gosnell murdered three babies who were born alive in his clinic.
According to a Fox producer who was present at the reading of the verdict, Gosnell apparently looked "completely taken aback" and "completely bewildered" when the verdict of guilty was delivered. His attorney, Jack McMahon, also looked visibly upset.
At the same time, an assistant prosecutor reportedly sobbed when the verdict was read.
The penalty phase of the trial will begin next Friday. Prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty.
This verdict is expected to send shockwaves through the abortion industry where the killing of viable babies is not uncommon. As we learned from the recent undercover sting operation conducted by the pro-life activist group, Live Action, this is much more common than the public has been led to believe.
“Both the National Abortion Federation and local Planned Parenthood knew of Gosnell’s grisly business, but they stayed silent," said Americans United for Life president Dr. Charmaine Yoest.
"Meanwhile, Gosnell’s clinic went almost two decades without inspection as women and girls were victimized and subjected to dangerous and inhumane conditions."
She echoed the findings of Live Action, saying Gosnell is not the aberration that abortion advocates want us to believe.
"Over the last three years at least 15 states have initiated investigations into the conditions and practices of abortion clinics. These investigations were triggered by women’s deaths, reports of dangerous and unsanitary practices that exposed women to injuries and infections, and infants born alive following attempted abortions."
After applauding the verdict and thanking everyone involved in bringing Gosnell to justice, Dr. Yoest said the time has come "to protect women and infants from an abortion industry that steadfastly refuses to police itself. How many women, girls, and infants must die before the abortion industry is held accountable?”
