France24.com is reporting that the office of Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault announced on Monday that the government no longer intended to present the gay-friendly bill which a large portion of the populace believes will undermine the traditional family.
"The government will not submit a family reform bill before the end of the year,” the prime minister’s office said.
The new law came at a bad time, just after the government legalized same-sex unions, a move that brought millions into the streets in protest last year and remains highly unpopular among the people.
This weekend was deja vu for an estimated 100,000 who returned to des rues of Paris and Lyon to protest the new bill which they say will legalize assisted conception for lesbian couples and surrogate motherhood for gay men who want children.
Government officials promised to write reforms into the law that would correct these problems, then quickly decided to scrap the whole bill until a later date.

"Protest leaders accused the government of 'family-phobia' and said assurances the family law would not include the reforms relating to gay parenthood were lies. French law currently only allows assisted reproduction for married couples with infertility problems," France24 reports.
"The government’s retreat showed that, with President François Hollande’s popularity at an historic low and municipal elections coming up next month, it is eager to avoid further conflicts with increasingly frustrated center-right voters."
Ludovine de la Rochère, the head of the Manif Pour Tous (Protest for All) movement that organized the demonstrations, called the government's decision to withdraw the bill a victory for the conservative movement. "What was outlined in this bill was not conducive to the interests of children or of the family," she said.
Proponents of the bill, such as Emmanuelle Cosse, head of the government's Green Party coalition, called the retraction of the bill "appalling."
Aides to the unpopular Hollande say the president will now focus on addressing the nation's record unemployment, something opponents of same-sex marriage asked him to do a year ago.
