Another development at the U.S. Bishops biannual meeting in San Antonio, Texas this week is the near unanimous approval of a new “Mass in Thanksgiving for the Gift of Human Life."
In a vote of 183 to 3, the bishops confirmed their commitment to the pro-life cause by approving the new Mass, which will be celebrated every year on Jan. 22, the anniversary of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in America. If Jan. 22 falls on a Sunday, the Mass will be moved to Jan. 23.
It was Archbishop Michael Sheehan of Santa Fe, New Mexico who brought the matter ot the attention of the bishops, saying it had always been a "source of wonderment" among his priests that there is no Mass in defense of unborn life.
"We have Masses for fair weather, for earthquakes, for prisoners, but nothing for ending abortion," Bishop Sheehan said.
The text requires approval from the Vatican before it becomes official.
