The Daily Mail is reporting on the story of Joey, who is married to fellow country singer Rory Feek. Joey was diagnosed with cervical cancer in June of 2014, only three months after giving birth to her first child, a daughter named Indiana, who has Down syndrome.
At the time, Joey underwent aggressive treatment and surgery and appeared to have made a full recovery, but the cancer came back with a vengeance and in spite of numerous rounds of grueling chemotherapy, the tumors spread throughout her abdomen. About three weeks ago, Joey opted to stop the chemo treatments in order to enjoy whatever time she has left with her husband and little girl.
Yesterday, Joey was released from the hospital and sent home on hospice care. Just before she left, Rory described the touching scenes he was witnessing in the hospital room between his wife and their little girls.
“Yesterday I sat her [Indiana] down in front of her mama and they smiled and played and loved each other the way that only mamas and their little ones can,” Rory wrote on his blog.
“Afterwards, when Indy got sleepy, Joey held her and sang In The Garden and other hymns as she softly stroked her silky-blonde hair. Perfect love filled that hospital room as we all held our breath and wiped our eyes.”
Joey had been experiencing some pain which the doctors said came from the growth of the tumors which were becoming inflamed. More aggressive measures were taken to ease her discomfort, and then doctors sent her home saying the best thing to do now was take steps to make her as comfortable as possible.
“Not the answer we hoped for… but the answer He has given us,” Rory writes.
Joey will now be cared for in the comfort of her home and the family has set up a play area next to her bed so that she can spend as much time as possible with little Indy.
“Joey is at peace with where she is and where she’s going,” Rory wrote. “So am I.”
This brave young woman has chosen to savor every moment of the life God gave her by spending her last days showering her husband and baby with love. When Jesus comes to take her home, she will surely die with the dignity of a daughter of God.
May God bless this precious family with His continued grace, strength, and mercy.
